| Brief Encounters |
What do people look for when
sizing up others? How do these judgments influence their conduct? And how
far will they go to hit it off? In this program, Stanford University’s
Philip Zimbardo, a leading expert in psychological experimentation, and
Mark McDermott, one of Britain’s top social psychologists, analyze the
subtle dynamics of meeting new people as day one in The Human Zoo unfolds.
In addition, other researchers explore the impact of first impressions at
a job interview, how physical attractiveness affects success, the
parameters of personal space, and facial expressions associated with
deceit. A Discovery Channel Production. (50 minutes, color) |

| Crimes of Obedience |
How far will people "go along
to get along"? Day three at The Human Zoo finds yesterday’s winning
team in command of the losers, a difficult situation that sparks a bitter
clash of wills that ends with the underdogs turning the tables on their
oppressors. Using the Zoo crew as a case study, this program investigates
the strange power of obedience. In addition, other researchers perform
experiments that reveal how easily authority, when viewed as infallible,
can lead people into errors of judgment and antisocial behavior. Footage
of Stanley Milgram’s controversial obedience experiment at Yale
University is provided as well. A Discovery Channel Production. (51
minutes, color) (C)2000 |

| Following the Herd |
In this program—day two at The
Human Zoo—the group is divided into two separate but distinctly unequal
teams in order to study the concept of herd mentality. In a struggle to
reconcile their conflicting loyalties, the subjects make some hard choices
as yesterday’s group bonding dissolves into adversarial team rivalry. In
addition, other researchers examine clique mentality, bystander apathy,
and diffusion of responsibility. As a counterpoint, the effects of
positive herd behavior are illustrated by a Weight Watchers support group.
Archival footage of the controversial 1971 Stanford University
"prison" experiment is also included. A Discovery Channel
Production. (50 minutes, color) (C)2000 |

| Open Warfare |
Angered by what they perceive as
federal abuses of power and "race mixing," the "new
patriots" have openly declared war on America. But who are they? By
tracing such key events as the Oklahoma City bombing and the debacles at
Ruby Ridge and Waco, this program examines the militia movement’s major
players, particularly Aryan Nations; its leader, Pastor Richard Butler;
and the splinter group, The Order. Along with extensive newsreel footage,
the video offers numerous interviews, including Kevin Flynn, an expert on
The Order and author of The Silent Brotherhood; Randy Weaver, the
fugitive in the Ruby Ridge standoff; James Nichols, brother of Oklahoma
City bomber Terry Nichols; and experts from the FBI, ATF, and Southern
Poverty Law Center. A Discovery Channel Production. (51 minutes, color)

| The Cronkite Report: The Dice are Loaded |
Is legalized gambling the end of
the rainbow, or is it the end of the American work ethic? With gross
receipts topping $300 billion per year, casinos, lotteries, and keno are
acculturating America’s youth to gambling as a substitute for hard work
and a legitimate way to fund state and federal government. In this
straight-talking exposé, journalism icon Walter Cronkite investigates the
long-term social, moral, and economic costs of America’s legal gambling
craze through interviews with congressmen, state and local officials,
religious leaders, professors, casino developers, gaming experts, and
citizens at large. Not available in French-speaking Canada. A Discovery

| The Lone Gunman |
Fueled by the rhetoric of hate,
the lone gunman views murder as a deadly mission. Using archival footage,
reenactments, and interviews with FBI and ATF experts as well as those
personally involved, this program isolates these elusive criminals,
examining the link between fringe groups and lone gunmen. A psychological
profile emerges in case studies of Benjamin Smith and his July 4th killing
spree in 1999; Eric Rudolph, accused of bombing the 1996 Olympic games;
and Shelley Shannon, an anti-abortion extremist in prison for attempted
murder. Several leaders of white supremacist groups are also interviewed,
including Matthew F. Hale, leader of the World Church of the Creator, and
Dr. William Pierce, leader of the National Alliance. Viewer discretion is
advised. A Discovery Channel Production. (51 minutes, color) (C)2000 |

| Trail of Terror |
America has tragically learned that terrorism can
originate from within its own borders. This program examines domestic
groups that inculcate members into hatred, often training them to carry
out deadly crimes. Of primary focus are the Ku Klux Klan; Aryan Nations;
Posse Comitatus; and the Covenant, the Sword and the Arm of the Lord, or
CSA. Key incidents examined include Gordon Kahl’s standoff with law
enforcement and the standoff at CSA’s fortified compound. Along with
newsreel footage and photos, the program features an array of
interviews, including Aryan Nations leader, Pastor Neuman Britton; James
Corcoran, author of Bitter Harvest: The Birth of Paramilitary
Terrorism in the Heartland; and Danny Coulson, Former Deputy
Assistant Director of the FBI. A Discovery Channel Production. (51
minutes, color) (C)2000
