Multicultural Studies
A Southern Town: 40 Years in Jackson, Mississippi
In this program, black and white civil rights activists from Jackson, Mississippi, reunite at Tougaloo Chapel to discuss the changes in race relations brought about over four decades. Archival footage sets the scene as the Reverend Ed King, SNCC’s Bob Moses, and others share, for the first time on film, exclusive personal accounts of the bloody Woolworth sit-in, the murder of Medgar Evers, the Freedom Summer Project, the revocation of TV station WLBT’s broadcasting license, and other pivotal events. They lived the struggle in the ’60s, and it lives in them today. A powerful addition to any library of civil rights materials. A Discovery Channel Production. (46 minutes, color) (C)2003 VHS33280

How Biased Are You?

This program unflinchingly explores the history and practice of racism through its extreme manifestations—slavery, the Holocaust, segregation, bias crimes, racial profiling—and its more subtle demonstrations, such as the pernicious subconscious biases that can exert an influence on everyday behavior. Hidden-camera footage, a demonstration of the provocative Greenwald/Banaji bias-sensitivity test, and interviews with victims of racism, advocates for equality, and others make this an especially important program. A Discovery Channel Production. (47 minutes, color)

Islam in America

Nabil drives a cab in New York City while Tarek is a stockbroker in Los Angeles. Usla is a junior partner in a Chicago law firm and Adel runs a gas station in Venus, Texas. For these and approximately seven million other Muslims in this country, the terrorist attacks of September 11th brought painful challenges to their notions of identity. From a sample group that spans recent immigrants to third-generation citizens, this program presents a series of portraits depicting Islamic lifestyles in a post-9/11 America. Candid interviews bring home the difficulties faced by Muslims in America, as well as the new perspectives they have achieved. A Discovery Channel Production. (48 minutes, color) (C)2003

Understanding Race Race: no gene has substantiated it and no scientist has quantified it, yet it continues to polarize the world’s populations like no other concept. This compelling program examines the history and power of the artificial distinction called "race," viewing it within historical, scientific, and cultural contexts. Topics include the anthropological unity of Homo sapiens; sanctioned discrimination, such as segregation; cultural biases based on racial stereotypes; and the underlying humanity that inextricably links us all. Warnings From a Small Town There’s something new about hatred and racism—its approach. This program exposes the new face of hate through detailed case studies that show how neo-Nazi and white supremacist groups have targeted America’s youth via mass media, particularly the Internet, so readily available in schools and homes. The grim example of Lancaster, California, demonstrates how "edge" communities—small towns outside of cities—can become recruiting grounds for gangs such as the Nazi Low Riders and the scenes of brutal crimes. Interviews with convicted NLR members at Pelican Bay prison drive home another outcome of hate crime. A Discovery Channel Production. (50 minutes, color) (C)2001 VHS32840
