Big as Life: Obesity in America
Since the 1960s, the number of Americans with
body mass indexes above 40 has more than tripled. This program
investigates the causes and health implications of obesity in America
while seeking to destigmatize adiposity. Interviews with doctors and
scientists and with adults and children dealing with weight control shed
light on issues including size acceptance, body image bias, and weight
discrimination while considering health risks, genetic influences, and
surgical interventions. The program also features innovative research
being done and model programs being put into practice by Louisiana State
University’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center. A Discovery Channel
Production. (51 minutes, color). Copyright date: 2002

Cholesterol Time Bomb
John is having a bad day. Before it ends,
decades of eating fatty foods will cause the death of half a million of
his heart cells. This program follows each stage of John’s heart attack,
from the rupture of a coronary plaque, to dissolving the resulting clot,
to ventricular defibrillation, to recovery. Astounding 3-D computer
animations, including blood flowing through plaque-riddled coronary
arteries and oxygen-starved heart cells bursting, together with
microscopic imaging of blood backing up into the lung tissue, reveal the
deadly effects of a lifetime of cholesterol buildup. A Discovery Channel
Production. (25 minutes, color) VIDEO

The Choice is Ours
Emphasizing balance, variety, and moderation,
this program offers a wide range of alternatives to the common
catch-as-catch-can approach to diet. Mediterranean and Asian foods;
vegetarianism and herbal supplements; holistic nutrition, as advocated by
Pittsburgh Steelers dietician Leslie Bonci; "naughty but
nutritious" French cuisine, prepared without the saturated fats; and
the Optimum Health Institute of San Diego’s regimen, which involves a
diet of raw vegetables, sprouts, and fruits, are among the dietary plans
considered. The bottom line? Taking care of the digestive tract can lead
to a healthier and longer life. A Discovery Channel Production. (51
